Why I Chose Business

Updated: Sep 21, 2021

I'll preface this by saying that I probably should've saved this for LinkedIn. However, I was reflecting on my recruiting process throughout college and thought it would be beneficial to share some personal experience and insight into my decision to choose business as a career.

Choosing a career path as an 18 year old going into college can be a daunting task.

Personally, pursuing a business degree was something that I wanted from a somewhat young age due to my infatuation with characters on television series. For the years leading up to my time at Texas A&M, I thought of business as fancy suits and New York skyscrapers. However, as time passed and I began immersing myself within the education and recruitment process with different firms, I really noticed my true calling to the business world.

Accomplishments are often meant to recognize or highlight the achievement of those who earn them. However, accomplishing my goal of getting into the business school at Texas A&M showcased more of my potential than my actual prior achievements. Particularly, my potential to excel in the business world beyond just the classroom. I bring this to your attention to preface my discussion of my skillsets, strengths and weaknesses that correlate directly with my desire to embark on a successful career in business and give you background into why I believe this is true.

The majority of the skills I possess relate heavily to my ability to communicate effectively. While coursework sometimes seems to weigh me down, I have the unique ability to garner help from those around me. Coinciding with that, once I understand a concept, my skill of being able to describe it to a non-technical person in a comprehensible way will treat me well in the business world. In addition, consistency is one of my greatest strengths. Habits can be the best or worst thing for a person, and being able to form consistent, healthy habits has helped me grow into a responsible person. In my coursework, I’ve only recently begun to understand how to cut out the bad habits, but have been consistent in my ability to put in the work necessary to understand difficult theories and discussions.

While exploring my strengths, I contrasted them with the appropriate weakness and now I hope to do the same when describing my weaknesses. Some tend to believe that me asking questions often is a weakness, but I think quite the contrary. Intellectual curiosity allows me to explore different solutions to complex problems. I hope that by engaging in inquisitive discussions I will be able to achieve high project ratings from employers and clients. In addition, I consider my lack of knowledge prior to college a weakness. It’s something that has put me ‘behind the curve’ in the majority of my classes, but also allowed me to learn with an unbiased perception on many business-related issues. My solution to a problem is often significantly different than my peers because of my background. Innovative thinkers are highly sought after in the business world, and while I don't consider myself an innovative genius, my ability to be self-reflective will allow me to showcase an unbiased and unique perspective on client issues.

So far, my pursuit of business has allowed me to meet some incredible friends and travel to some of my favorite places. As I start my career in the coming year, I'm hopeful that life gets back to normal and I am able to meet more great people and experience more great places.

I still cannot say I know exactly where life will take me, however, having been provided the opportunity to ‘kickstart’ my career in business, I know that I will one day achieve success. One day as I look back on my career I will hopefully give much credit to my degree at Texas A&M and the many mentors along the way.
