Behind the Scenes with Stand-Up Comedian, Matt Dotson: A Q&A

In recent years, Matt Dotson has been writing, rehearsing, and honing in on his craft of comedy. He's a marketing broker by day and a stand-up comedian by night. He's someone who has worked diligently over the past few years and is now getting ready to release his comedy with the world. You can read his story below - watch our interview on YouTube, or listen to it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

The Backstory

Matt Dotson, or as I know him, Baby Dot, was my next door neighbor in College Station, TX and has become one of my best friends. During my first few years at Texas A&M, I developed a friendship with Dotson's older brother who we commonly referred to as "Dot" - hence, the younger brother Matt being known as "Baby Dot."

After making countless memories in college, Dotson and I have moved on to the real world and both pursue our creative passions in spare time from our full time jobs. Mine as a writer/podcaster and Dotson as a comedian.

After years of sending his friends voice memos of his funny anecdotes, Dotson has recently taken the leap and began performing on stage. According to Dotson, his time on stage,

"...started out slow with a few chuckles here and there. You only have a few minutes on stage and I've already seen myself becoming more comfortable."

What's New

After initially branching out and pursuing the comedy scene around the local Dallas area, with open mic performances in places like Mckinney, TX, Dotson has now started to expand his horizons.

Recently, Dotson was noted for his 5 min open mic routine in New York City that left the audience in a roar as he was the open mic performer of the night. According to Dotson,

"the experience was eye-opening for me. It really was a defining moment that made me a more confident performer."

Since then, Dotson has been ironing out his approach to launch his comedy on social media. His approach thus far has been to stick to the basics and perform solely at open mic nights - but with the ever-evolving world of social media, he feels there is a great opportunity for comedians to make a name for themselves by posting their material.

However, as opposed to the somewhat common approach used by most comedians of posting 60 second clips of their best punchlines - Dotson plans to pursue a more creative route.

Over the next few months Dotson will continue working with an editor to compile the equivalent of a comedy special with the videos from his open mic nights. So in contrast to only posting short edits, he will be releasing his own version of a comedy special with full versions of his best routines.

Final Thoughts

Matt Dotson has the creativeness and passion to become the comedian he has always hoped to be and I can't wait to see where his career takes him.
